How Paper is Made for Kids

Chipping the Logs
The logs are chopped into small pieces called chips. These chips are very important because they are the main ingredient for making paper. The chips are cleaned to remove any dirt or bark.
Breaking Down the Chips
The chips are then cooked in a large pot with water and chemicals. This process is called pulping. The chemicals help to break down the chips into tiny fibers. The mixture is cooked for a while until the fibers are soft and can be mixed together.
Removing the Lignin
After pulping, the mixture still contains lignin, which is a type of glue that holds the fibers together in the wood. To make good paper, we need to remove the lignin.
